Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by the famous English writer, Jane Austen, who was the sixth children in a family of seven and was born in the village of steventon in Hampshire in 1775 and died of Addison’s disease in 1817. The book first published on 28 January 1813 by the bookseller Thomas Egerton who had also published Sense and Sensibility, the original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions .
Pride and Prejudice is a love story, mainly tells the love between Elizabeth and Darcy. It divided into 2 volumes and is composed of 42 chapters altogether. The major characters are Mr. Darcy, A rich and proud young man. Elizabeth, the second eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Bingley , A rich young bachelor. Darcy, a friend of Bingley’s , was attracted to Elizabeth, a lively and spirited girl. But Darcy greatly offends her by his supercilious behavior and this dislike is increased by Wickham, a dashing young militia officer of the unjust treatment he has met with at Darcy's hands. One day when Darcy and Bingley’s two sisters disgusted with the vulgarity of Mrs. Bennet and her two youngest daughters, effectively separated Bingley and Jane. Meanwhile, Collins, a cousin of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, married charlotte, a friend of Elizabeth’s, for Elizabeth’s refuse to marry him. But One day Darcy send Elizabeth a letter, in which he justifies the separation of his friend Bingley and Jane and make it clear that Wickham is. At a dancing ball, it is obvious that Mr. Bingley could not help falling in love at the first sight with Miss Jane because of her stunning beauty. Mrs. Benne was so excited that she could not hold her manner and declared publicly she would have a daughter married soon, which frightened Mr. Bingley away. Mr. Collins, a distance nephew of Mr. Bennet, came to ask a marriage to one of his cousins before Mrs. Bennet was able to get clear why Mr. Bingley left suddenly. After receiving the hint from Mrs. Bennet that Jane already had an admirer, Mr. Collins turned to Elizabeth without wasting a minute and to Miss Charlotte Lucas two days later after refused by Elizabeth. The story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the Bennet. In a ball, Elisabeth gave such a bad impression on Darcy’s first pride that she refused Darcy’s first proposal. Darcy was so surprised by Elisabeth’s refusal that he loved Elisabeth more deeply. However, in England the figure maybe is my most admirable authoress Miss Austen who can never have too many respects from the common people just like me. After read her two masterpieces of books Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, I feel so proud of being female to see a world-famous authoress using her independent thoughts, humor words to show us the relationship between the so-called superiors and the lower-class.
At that time, neither in the east nor in the west, it is not so easy for a woman to become a great figure with literary reputation. In China Li made it, while in England Miss Austen with her unique characteristic also realized her dream after a long struggle with the temporal points. It seems that all in Jane’s life, she made a decision between sense and sensibility; once there was an old saying “Affection is desirable, money is absolutely indispensable.” She resolutely chose her true love but not a splendid life or a comfortable home, what a pity she can not marry the one she did not really love even a beloved one, in her short life, she finished six famous books with her heart and soul but never married and stayed single for ever.
When reading Pride and Prejudice, I wondered why the oldest sister in the Bennet family also was named Jane, is there any possibility Jane Bennet is the soul of Miss Austen; and Miss Austen expected to realize all the pity which can not come true in her real life, so Jane Bennet was pictured as prefect as possible to be the best of the five sisters.
It’s a classical book with abundant description of everyone’s inner heart, especially the changes in their hearts. It can never deserve too many analyses for it was so wonderfully worked. One can say anything but ordinary to show our respects and admiration.
The man said“I do not have that talent of conversing easily with people I have never met before.” The woman said“We all don’t know him.” The book is full of the man’s pride and the woman’s prejudice in its lines and words.
From his pride we can see his confidence and persistence; whereas from his pride we can’t see his kindness and gentleness which he hid behind the surface.

In the book once the proud Mr Dracy talked about the traits an accomplished woman must have, it needed a thorough knowledge of music, singing, dancing, drawing and modern languages, and besides this, a certain something in her manner of walking, in her voice and her behaviour. What’s more, something more solid, the improvement of her mind by wide reading. It could never be too strict for a common woman to follow.
About the attitudes to the marriage, Charles Dickens in the Oliver Twist also showed us the opinions of that day, he said if a man has ambitions to enter politics, then he marries a woman with a stain on her name, over though it’s not her fault, it might spoil his chances of success in his life. But love is so great that nothing can conquer it, and in the Pride and Prejudice we see the type of classical love, if we say in the realization we are so sorry to see the over more interest lead us to forget what love is, what a pity when love is not so pure as it should be, what a pity when love is used as a medium of exchange.
To my happiness the books inflected Miss Austen’s marriage view, it is wrong to get married for property, money and states. She objects to getting married for money and regarding the marriage as a trifling matter. She also points that the man and the woman’s emotion is the foundation of an ideal marriage.
After reading it, I feel that I just want to turn Elizabeth who is ordinary but with special beauty, brave but with a little stubborn, though she is not a prefect woman our eyes, she does be a woman with prefect disadvantages. To the hero Mr Dracy, I feel that I just want to marry a gentleman like Mr Dracy who always puts his love deep in his heart, till the day he made sure that Elizabeth was the one he wanted to spend the rest time of the live. Under the handsome and gentle; proud and serious face, there was a kind heart full of love.
Pride is just like a piece of beautiful clothes which is luxurious and untouchable. However, the expense of pride is loneliness. Prejudice is just like the clouds floating in the sky with its freedom. However, the expense of prejudice is lost.
What I learnt from the books and Jane Austen is deeply printed in my mind and I should never forget Elizabeth and Mr Dracy’s prefect love story, they usefully influenced each other. His mind might have been softened and his manners improved by her sociability, and she might have learnt from his greater judgment and knowledge of the world. Just like a fairy tale, the price and princess have a happy live together, which I am looking forward.
Watching the film makes me to think much more about marriage. In my opinion, the happiest marriage is a combination of love and money, but true love is still the most important. The marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth is a good example. After undergoing many setbacks, Darcy’s pride and Elizabeth’s prejudice eventually eliminates, the lovers finally get married.
Elizabeth is the Bennets’ second daughter, an active, intelligent and distinct girl. She has a middle-class family background and has not been affected by the formal education belonging to those aristocratic young girls, so she isn’t good at music and painting, but she has read many books which make her knowledgeable and perceptive. The most important aspect is that she is a lady with dignity and upbringing. Elizabeth is the ideal image for women as well as the most charismatic person in the film.
Darcy is a man with tall figure and good manner. He is handsome, rich and powerful. So he is the ideal husband of most girls. But he has grown up in the surroundings with strong sense of power, so he is always selfish and pride and he has a critical look at each individual. So he looks down upon anyone else, except his filmily members. But something has changed when Darcy meets Elizabeth. After Elizabeth’s refuse to get married with him, he begins to be aware of his own short-comings. He accepts Elizabeth’s criticism, and faithfully corrects the short comings and mistakes. He is no longer pride and has a real love with Elizabeth.
In the film, when they first meet each other in the ball, I can tell something special in their eyes, and then I guess there will be a story between them. In fact, they are attracted by each other at the first sight but even they don’t know it themselves. At first, Darcy doesn’t put an eye on Elizabeth. Darcy says that Elizabeth is beautiful, but not enough to attract him. Compared with his friend, Mr. Bingley, he looks cool, unfriendly and lack of enthusiastic. This makes others to think him as a pride man, so it is with Elizabeth. She begins to have prejudice on him.
When Elizabeth meets the handsome officer, Mr. Wickham, Wickham says something bad of Mr. Darcy. What he says makes Elizabeth deeply believe that Darcy is not a good person, pride and selfish. What’s worse, Darcy advises Bingley that Jane is not fit for him. And doing so, makes Jane feel very sad. All these things are the reasons why Elizabeth misunderstands Darcy. So when Mr. Darcy can’t help showing his love to her, she refused him with sharp tongue. “You are the last person I’ll marry!”
Maybe it is fate; later Elizabeth meets Darcy when she is visiting Darcy’s house which he hardly comes back. What she hears and what she sees show that Darcy is a kind person, not the pride man used to be in her mind. When she knows that Darcy helps Lydia to get married with Wickham, she changes her attitude to Mr. Darcy eventually. After undergoing many setbacks, the lovers finally get married. We can guess that they will live a happy life.
So it is with Jane and Bingley. They love each other at the first sight, but they are multi-blocked, after their departure, they miss each other very much. In her attitude to marriage, what she needs is a stable life that she would not be exposed to the cold temperatures and suffers hunger in the future. So she gets married with Collin, a rich priest. Such marriage without love is too practical, so it is a kind of superficial marriage with happiness.
Lydia is an impulsive, credulous, narrow-minded girl. So she is easily taken in by Mr. Mickham’s sweat words and honeyed phrases. Wickham comes down in the world because of misbehavior and gets into debt. And he believes that marriage is also a way to approach the fortune. Lydia is just his tool to gain money. Such couple only seek having had experience but not everlasting and unchanging. It is doomed to be a tragedy.
Such marriages will never be happy. However, how can we fall in love with the right person and harvest a happy marriage? In my opinion, both money and love is important. Money is the basement. Since we are ordinary people, we need to eat, to dress, to live and so on. Money is the basement of marriage; however, it doesn’t mean that we must get married with rich persons but persons who can at least give you a security of life. However, the most important aspect for a marriage is true love. The marriage without love would eventually move toward disappointment and suffering. True love can sweep away all the setbacks on the way of marriage. Read love makes Elizabeth give up her prejudice and accept Darcy again. And real love makes Darcy change the attitude of being arrogant and wins Elizabeth’s heart and love. After undergoing so many setbacks, they finally walk together. This is the power of love. Loves can really create miracles.
Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters.
